| Jurisdiction | Primary record system | Best first move |
|---|---|---|
| Pennington County, South Dakota | South Dakota UJS PARS / court-record access. | Use the UJS statewide summary tools, then the Pennington County clerk for full or older records. |
| Pennington County, Minnesota | Minnesota Court Records Online. | Search MCRO with the Minnesota access rules, then use the local District Court when clerk help is needed. |
The South Dakota UJS public-access page says PARS charges $20 for each submitted search, including searches that return no records.
UJS states that criminal cases are available from 1989 to the present unless sealed. A no-hit cannot answer a pre-1989 question.
For a criminal case before 1989, UJS directs the requester to the clerk in the county where the case was filed. For Pennington County, use the Seventh Judicial Circuit clerk information.
When the summary identifies a case, UJS says open court records can be viewed or printed at courthouse public-access terminals; contact the clerk for the full court record if needed.
Useful for statewide summary discovery, but it is not the same object as every pleading, order and judgment in the file.
Use the public terminal when the open case record needs to be inspected directly rather than summarized.
For older files or a complete copy request, the filing county clerk is the operational endpoint. Keep the requested case number and person identifiers with the order.
MCRO states that pending criminal, traffic and petty-misdemeanor cases with no conviction do not return in Case Search or Hearing Search when the search is by defendant name. The same pending cases return when searched by case number. Therefore, a defendant-name no-hit cannot safely be converted into “no pending case.”
Use the Pennington County Minnesota District Court contact path for the local trial court.
A case number is especially valuable in Minnesota because it can surface a known pending case that defendant-name search omits.
Record filed charges, later amendments and the final disposition separately. An initial complaint is not the same as a conviction.
Sealed, confidential or access-restricted information should be described as unavailable through the public route, not as proof that no underlying record exists.
